Local TV Blackout Looms As Chargers Ticket Sales Lag
San Diego, CA, United States (AHN) – San Diego football fans are concerned about a potential local TV blackout Sunday, when the Chargers play their home opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Chargers Executive Vice President A.G. Spanos confirmed Wednesday their tickets sales were still below the required quota.
According to NFL rules, matches that failed to reach the sellout mark 72 hours before the actual game cannot be broadcasted on local TV.
Spanos said the Charges only have until Thursday at 1:15 p.m. to sell almost 8,000 tickets, something near impossible to achieve.
With this development, the Charges’ home opener will unlikely be televised in the San Diego, Los Angeles and Palm Springs media markets.
Spanos added he was disappointed about the outcome of the ticket sales despite the solid performance the Charges put up last season.
With popular teams on their schedule, the Chargers managed to sell out all their home games in the 2009-2010 NFL season.
However, Spanos added that poor economy in San Diego County and a weak regular-season schedule contribute to the downfall of ticket sales.
Moreover, the executive said only the Chargers’ home game against the New England Patriots is a guaranteed sellout game, while matches against the Tennessee Titans and Arizona Jaguars are still questionable.
The Chargers finished second in the AFC standings with a 13-3 record, but they were upset by the New York Jets in the divisional playoff last season.
